Floor Finish: Terrazzo - Internal
Slip Hazard: Entrance Foyer and Aisles
Condition & History
- High number of slips on a very regular basis
- Slip accidents occurred on wet and dry days
- The floor was considered safe and legal during certain parts of the day, however after certain cleaning practices, spillages and high usage times the surface fell below the HSE limits and inevitably accidents took place
- Issue was monitoring cleaning staff to maintain a safe floor
- Staff managed to keep surface safe for maximum three weeks and then problem returned
- The cost of monitoring the floor was recognised as being the best method forward but 3rd party consultancy costs for regular advice to cover the 500+ stores was prohibitive
- Training of staff took place but the monitoring became impractical with the paper trail required
- Head Office was not able to collate all the information and format into a specific method. Budgets could not be maintained for each store and consequently forecasting became difficult.
Findings
Expensive remedial works had to be conducted to resolve the issue using a chemical treatment that provided a better level of slip resistance under these specific conditions. Unfortunately without the correct monitoring method and procedures the floor returned to the current slip hazard.
